My two lives!

by Christina Ngo

CHAPTER I

Stephanie McDonnell

T

he sandy shore of Spring Bay tickled my toes as I ran with my friend. I suddenly stopped and asked, “What time is it?” Carmen turned around checking her waterproof watch and said, “My gosh, it’s ten-thirty! We’re late for our lesson!” “Oh no!” I cried, “Are you sure? I thought we only left for an hour, I checked the town clock a few minutes ago.” I gulped, now I remembered why I asked Carmen the time and did not look at the clock; the town clock was not working!

“Stephanie, how could you forget? The town clock doesn’t work!”

“Whoops! My brain is a little confused at the moment.”

“No whoops, we’re gonna be twenty-five minutes late!”

“Sorry, you should have checked the time too. It was not my job. You have the watch, not me.”

“I guess I should’ve, it’s just I hardly check the time and I’m used to you checking the town clock.”

“It’s OK, but right now we have to get our tennis stuff ready.”

We ran to my beach house that my dad and I rented. It was not expensive. I ran so fast that I did not see dad’s car in front of me. “Watch out!” screamed dad. I quickly got out of the way. Dad was not speeding; I just did not see him. The car screeched to a stop. Dad got out and shouted at me mostly (he hardly ever shouts at Carmen), “What do you think you’re doing, aren’t you two supposed to be at your lesson?!” “Sorry,” I mumbled, “I did not see you there and yes we are supposed to be at our lesson. Can you give us a lift? We’re really late.” “No, I’m having a meeting here about now and I would be pretty embarrassed if my boss gets here and I’m not there,” dad said. I nodded. Carmen and I said our goodbyes to dad before we rode towards the nearest tennis court.

As we made our way to the court I suddenly felt dizzy. The dizziness was all over me. I couldn’t bear it. I was falling, into a gigantic hole in the ground. Carmen was gone, and everything else had disappeared out of sight. Then I saw flashes of red, green, purple and orange. What was happening? Was I dreaming? No this was reality. Then the dizziness suddenly stopped. I looked around, everything was different. Where was I and where was Carmen? I gasped; I was at the tennis court, the one where I took lessons. Everyone around me was familiar. The girl standing next to me was Arlian. A voice in my head told me that she was my friend, my best friend in fact.
